The implementation of Scan4Safety within NHS trusts should be undertaken using the established methodology as documented in a set of ‘How To’ guides that are in development. Using a phased approach to apply and implement three core enablers and three primary use cases, the programme intends to use tested processes to improve safety and efficiency at the frontline of the NHS.
Compliance is achieved through the successful implementation of the three core enablers: Place, Product, Patient. By using GS1 keys to identify these enablers, the trust can begin to capture real-time data through the process of scanning. Locations are identified using Global Location Numbers (GLNs), Products are identified using Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs) and Patients are identified using Global Service Relationship Numbers (GSRNs). The programme’s initial benefits are summarised in three use cases: Inventory Management, Purchase-to-Pay and Product Recall. Proper and robust implementation of the Use Cases and Enablers will result in better quality data, more efficient processes and safer care.
In the same way as for suppliers to the NHS, Scan4Safety has published a timeline of milestones for the NHS. Trust compliance is measured using a phased approach that establishes good practise in change management. The large number of internal stakeholders within a hospital means that an important aspect of roll-out is accurate and detailed communication. The general principle of Scan4Safety is that the GS1 and PEPPOL standards should be adopted across the “length and breadth” of the Trust as defined in individual requirements and milestones. Regular assessments will be taken throughout Phases 0-4, at the end of Phase four the trust is required to undergo an independent audit that demonstrates the successful implementation of the three enablers and three use cases.
